New Groove Armada

May 28th, 2007

I picked up a copy fo the new Groove Armada album - really good stuff, some fantastic tracks including ‘Get Down’, ‘Drop That Thing’ and ‘Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control)’…

Im gonna use a couple of the tracks in my next mikemix (coming soon - after I move back to Bristol!)

On an unrelated note, I saw New Young Pony Club do a DJ set in a club in Bristol on Saturday night - they opened with ‘We are the night’ by the Chemical Brothers…

Will try and catch them again sometime, the girls wanted to go somewhere else instead ;)

Hello and rubber hugs

May 19th, 2007

Yan here, I’ll join force with Mike here and share bits of what I enjoy from time to time, I will mainly post about electronic / experimental / avant-garde odd bleep.

Here we go first with something I’ve been enjoying quite a lot those past few weeks.

FUTURE CONDITIONAL - We Don’t Just Disappear

LTM Recordings release the debut album by Future Conditional, the electro pop project of Piano Magic’s Cedric Pin and Glen Johnson, on April 2nd.

“We Don’t Just Disappear,” influenced predominantly by the early 80’s synth-swathed pop of New Order, Kraftwerk, Section 25 and OMD, includes guest vocals by Melanie Pain (Nouvelle Vague), Bobby Wratten (Trembling Blue Stars), Angele David-Guillou (Klima/Piano Magic), Dan Matz (Windsor For The Derby) and Carolyn Allen from The Wake.

“Future Conditional (however) sound so darned authentic I wouldn’t have been surprised if someone said this was a lesser known album from 1982. (They) may have cut their teeth making electronic shoegazing bliss but on ‘We Don’t Just Disappear’ they show also that they can transpose their songwriting skill into the world of electro-pop, and it works marvelously. Enjoyable retro electro fun, and that’s not something you’ll hear me say too often!” - Boomkat

Something i different i purchased…

May 8th, 2007

A small break from dance music, I have decided to buy the new Mark Ronson album, to listen too in the car…

It is fantastic!  Hearing all those covered tracks sung by familiar artists - its really easy to listen too, and very well produced - a nice relaxed ‘jazz’ feel.

I particularly like Lily Allen’s cover of Kaiser Chief’s “Oh My God” - i have her album too, really like her ;)

Oh, i also managed to get hold of the Chemical Brothers - Do It Again PROMO CD - Love it!

New Chemical Brothers

April 15th, 2007

NEW ALBUM – WE ARE THE NIGHT
RELEASED 18th JUNE ON FREESTYLE DUST/VIRGIN RECORDS

Following their fourth consecutive number 1 album, the double Grammy winning “Push The Button”, The Chemical Brothers return with their sixth long player, set for release on 18th June 2007. “We Are The Night” is The Chemical Brothers finest record yet, twelve tracks of psychedelic warehouse party acid music, euphorically melodic and as uncompromising as their retina scorching live shows.

Recorded undercover of darkness in a bomb proof bunker in South London, “We Are The Night” is a route map through modern psychedelia; a derailed rollercoaster that barrels the listener onto a journey that moves seamlessly from frenetic percussion workout that threatens to splash out of the speakers to metronomic pulses that sound like the kind of music that gets played out at some kind of future disco populated entirely by robots; from the wheezing groans of modular synthesizers that sound like they’ve been left out in the rain to die to hallucinogenic public service announcements about salt water fish. All the while, disembodied robo-voices boom out mind control commandments as guest vocals weave in and out of tracks like previously undiscovered instruments…

Effortlessly evoking the dancefloors of Manchester and Minneapolis in the early 80s and London of 2007, “We Are The Night” is The Chemical Brothers at their very best. Infectious from the ominous opening through to the gorgeous dying embers, the record features some of their most mind-blowing music to date, a massive step up for the duo in terms of both production and sound. The album builds on the band’s immense back catalogue and reaffirms them as true pioneers of electronic music, a band who are consistently hugely successful both critically and commercially.

“We Are The Night” follows on from 2005’s “Push The Button”, which featured the huge single “Galvanize”, the most played record on Radio One of that year. As is often the way with Chemical Brothers records, it achieved a life of it’s own, soundtracking everything from South American raves to the Notting Hill Carnival and all points in between. The duo recently sneaked out an album preview (the anonymously released ultra limited “Electronic Battle Weapon” 8 & 9). Much of the record has been tested out on dancefloors across the world during the past twelve months.

“We Are The Night” - the soundtrack to the summer just arrived…

Look out for ’Do It Again’, the first single to be taken from the album. Featuring Ali Love, its out 4th June.

Tracklisting:

1. No Path To Follow
2. We Are The Night
3. All Rights Reserved Ft. The Klaxons
4. Saturate
5. Do It Again Ft. Ali Love
6. Das Spiegel
7. The Salmon Dance Ft. Fatlip
8. Burst Generator
9. A Modern Midnight Conversation
10. Battle Scars. Ft Willy Mason
11. Harpoons
12. The Pills Won’t Help You Now Ft. Midlake.

The Chemical Brothers have exclusively announced that they will be headlining the Other Stage at Glastonbury this year.

To coincide with the album release The Chemical Brothers have also lined up some of their biggest shows to date with headline appearances confirmed at Rockness, Creamfields and Bestival.

I have heard the track “Do It Again Ft. Ali Love” - I do like it, it doesn’t seem to have had many good reviews so far, especially with the ‘core’ Chem fans but as a casual fan i think its gonna be a huge hit… ive been trying to source a copy so i can listen to it a bit more :)

This is the Behringer BCD2000…

April 15th, 2007

Here is what i have been using for the past 6 months - very nice piece of kit, simple to use - allowing more concentration on being creative…

It comes packaged with its own software, which is ok, but looks like a Tonka toy on the screen - i have been using Traktor 3.0 with it, but i now need to make my PC faster cos it uses alot of power..

The new version out soon (BCD3000) will come packaged with Traktor 3.0 LE, so i’m thinking of investing..

Rex The Dog video

January 26th, 2007

Click Here [opens in new window] for one of the funniest videos i have seen recently!

It is the video for the Rex The Dog remix of Tony The Beat by The Sounds which is due for release in the UK in the next few weeks (it is currently available on 7″ single, but it does not have the Rex The Dog Remix).

The track has a retro-pop sound, with a bit of hip-hop sounding vocal and a fantastic hooky chorus (think Mel & Kim - in fact one of the lyrics is ‘Push it real good’).  Rex the Dog has layered on his own unmistakeable style to the track with a synth electro bassline and break beats.

The track has also had alot of airplay on the specialist dance shows on BBC Radio 1, and Annie Mac in particular (who is a big Rex The Dog fan)  sharing her enthusiasm for the track.
